At the conclusion of the North American round of the Maazel/Vilar Conductors' Competition last week, the jury in Bloomington again made a unanimous decision to defer the selection of finalists until a greater number of candidates has been auditioned at the four remaining rounds (in Europe, South America and Australia). A similar conclusion was reached following the East Asian round in Tokyo in October 2001.
The determination of which candidates will be invited to the final round in New York will be made at the discretion of Maestro Maazel and the forthcoming regional round juries. While the number of finalists and the timetable for their selection remain open, the Competition will make any additional announcements relating to the final round as soon as possible.
