FOUR FINALISTS CHOSEN TO CONDUCT FINAL COMPETITION CONCERTS

Fifth finalist recognized by jury will conduct an additional work on Friday, September 27 program

NEW YORK, NY--The jury of the Maazel/Vilar Conductors' Competition announced this evening the four finalists chosen to conduct the two programs which conclude the Competition's final round. They are Natalia Luis-Bassa from Venezuela, Joji Hattori from Japan, Bundit Ungrangsee from Thailand and Xian Zhang from China. Additional, the jury has chosen to recognize a fifth finalist, Joana Carneiro from Portugal, who will conduct the Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin by Richard Wagner as an addition to Friday evening's program.

Natalia Luis-Bassa will lead the first half of the September 27 concert, conducting works of Puccini--the Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut and two arias with soprano Ana Maria Martinez--and Debussy's La Mer. Following the Lohengrin Act III Prelude conducted by Ms. Carneiro, Joji Hattori will complete the second half of the program with Ravel's Pavane pour une infante defunte, Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, with Yura Lee as violin soloist, and Respighi's Pines of Rome.

On Saturday, September 28, beginning at 7pm, Bundit Ungrangsee will conduct the opening half of the concert, which includes the Mendelssohn Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream and two works of Richard Strauss, the Four Last Songs with soprano Christine Brewer, and Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche. The program concludes under the direction of Xian Zhang, with Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with cellist Han-Na Chang and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.

Any or all of the four finalists, at the discretion of the jury will be eligible for the Competition's prize. An announcement of the jury's decision will be made following Saturday evening's performance.
