EIGHT FINALISTS NAMED FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF SIXTH REGIONAL ROUND IN SYDNEY

Candidates will rehearse and perform with the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, September 23-28.

Following the recent successful completion of the sixth regional round in Sydney, Australia, the Maazel/Vilar Conductors' Competition is pleased to announce the eight candidates chosen for the final round by Maestro Maazel and his colleagues on the regional round juries. The finalists, listed with ages and nationalities, are:

Joana Carneiro (25, Portugal)
Matthew Coorey (28, Australia)
Joji Hattori (32, Japan)
Kynan Johns (27, Australia)
Manfred Hermann Lehner (30, Germany)
Natalia Luis-Bassa (35, Venezuela)
Bundit Ungrangsee (31, Thailand)
Xian Zhang (28, China)

Two alternate finalists have also been named: Alexander Mickelthwate (31, Germany) and Carlo Tenan (32, Italy). Gustavo Dudamel, a finalist named earlier, has withdrawn from the Competition due to a scheduling conflict.

The eight finalists were chosen from fifty-six conductors who participated in extensive auditions during six regional rounds held over the last year in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.
