NEW YORK, NY — The Maazel/Vilar Conductors’ Competition is pleased to announce that six conductors have been invited to participate in the final round of its inaugural Competition, which will take place in New York at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, September 23 through 28, 2002.
The six finalists were chosen from the 48 conductors who participated in extensive auditions during five regional rounds, held over the past eight months in Tokyo, Japan; Bloomington, Indiana; Krakow, Poland; London, England; and São Paulo, Brazil. The selection was made by Maestro Lorin Maazel, working in close consultation with the colleagues who joined him to comprise the regional round juries.
The six finalists announced today are:
· Joana Carneiro, 25, from Portugal
· Gustavo Dudamel, 21, from Venezuela
· Joji Hattori, 32, from Japan
· Manfred Hermann Lehner, 30, from Germany
· Natalia Luis-Bassa, 35, from Venezuela
· Xian Zhang, 28, from China.
Because of the extended timetable of the Competition’s regional auditions, two (or more) additional finalists will be named following a sixth round in Sydney, Australia, in August.
Further details about the schedule and repertoire for the final round in New York will be announced shortly.
